We use both a double headed, Swedish throwing axe (the BEAST) and smaller tomahawk throwing axes. Our targets are simple tree ‘rounds’ mounted on a tripod.
The aim is to get a single revolution of the axe followed by a ‘stick’ in the target with the leading edge of the blade.
It’s not easy with the BEAST because it takes quite a bit of strength and co-ordination. It’s a great feeling when you stick it, though!
The tomahawks are a little easier but still require a fair bit of technique.

we use double edged throwing knives which means you have to have a handle throw (so you don’t cut yourself during the release).
Throwing via the handle means that you need a revolution and a half during flight.
The targets are simple painted pine boards for a consistent stick.
